David Gregory to host Meet The Press

Politico is reporting that MSNBC's David Gregory will be the new host for Meet The Press, replacing the late great Tim Russert. If you need your memory jogged Gregory is the gray-haired tall guy imbued the same engaging personality as CNN's Wolf Blitzer.

This choice isn't too surprising. Viewers came to expect Meet The Press to be provocative under Russert, but the only other NBC talent would have either been confrontational (with commentators like Olbermann, Scarborough and Maddow) or controversial (Matthews will most likely run for senator of Pennsylvania). At least Gregory has an air of levelheadedness. Maybe he won't be as milquetoast as I expect, prove me wrong!

Colbert drops a hot steaming metaphor

Last Thursday Stephen had a sexy way of explaining the credit crisis to Stephen in "Formidable Opponent":

None of these companies are safe to mate with now. You see, a terrible credit disease has infected the market. It's like, um... business syphilis.

Well how did that happen?

Whelp, it started with a few slutty lenders who jumped into bed with some really sub-prime mortgages. The next thing you knew you had a credit orgy; people were swapping derivatives, A.I.G. was all up in Fannie Mae, Wachovia took on Golden West, then it turned around and got it on with AG Edwards, then Citigroup had 'em all at once. It was a steaming pile of hot slapping assets. No one knew who was bundling who, but if felt good and everyone was doing it. And in the end, let's just say the market blew its liquidity.

This week The Daily Show had two brilliant bits. Kristen Schaal and Samantha Bee hosted on Wednesday, briefly...



The whole episode is awesome, even the interview with Peggy Noonan. The next day they took apart this schizophrenic interview McCain did on Fox News in which he both decries the bailout bill and praises the hell out of it. It's about 45 seconds in....

Lara Logan on The Daily Show

CBS News Chief Foreign Correspondent Lara Logan talked to Jon Stewart a couple of days ago about reporting from Afghanistan, Iraq, and the public's apathy towards the conflicts.

"I was asked once 'Do you feel responsible for the American public having a bad view, a negative view of the war in Iraq?' and I looked at the reporter and I said, 'Tell me the last time you saw the body of a dead American soldier, what does that look like? Who in America knows what that looks like? Because I know what that looks like, and I feel responsible for the fact that no one else does.'"

Duckman on DVD

Duckman, the mid-90s animated show about a private eye duck, his sidekick pig Cornfed and dysfunctional family is finally finally coming to DVD September 16. Duckman was voiced by Jason Alexander and he stuck with the show even as Seinfeld was taking off. The series is like a mixture of the absurdity of The Oblongs, the quick humor of Family Guy and the occasional sober conclusions you might see in The Simpsons. If you've never seen the show there are plenty of episodes on YouTube. Finally I can toss those shitty MPEG TV rips...

Jon Stewart interviews Bill Moyers

Moyers was on The Daily Show the other night and he had some things to say about the interview with Rev. Jeremiah Wright (Obama's former pastor), John McCain's relationship with Rev. John Hagee, and the risks to democracy made by economic disparity. He has a new book out called Moyers On Democracy.

"Democracy is a story of narrow escapes and we may be running out of luck because we have created problems that our politics will not solve. Whether it's a war that goes on and on even though seventy percent of the people don't like it, whether it's our infrastructure that's crumbling .... We are becoming a society that is divided in great extremes; the divide is greater than it's been since the Great Depression."
